During the 2010s, the music industry fragmented. People started playing music or watching music videos on YouTube. The Billboard charts got a little weird, but this opened the door for a few more one-hit wonders. While we often remember the one-hit wonders of the '90s or '80s, the 2010s also gave us many notable one-hit artists. Here are some of the biggest.

Have you ever watched "Saturday Night Live" and seen who the musical guest was and wondered, "What other song are they going to play?" That was definitely the case with Gotye. "Somebody That I Used to Know" (featuring Kimbra) was a big hit, but that's the beginning and end of Gotye's zeitgeist. That weird music video probably helped too.

Mark Foster, lead singer of Foster the People, made a living writing commercial jingles while trying to become a musician. That's not surprising given the nature of "Pumped Up Kicks." It's one of those songs that is so catchy that it takes a minute to realize that the lyrics are a bit dark.

Magic!
Lawrence K. Ho/Los Angeles Times putem Getty Imagesa
The term "Canadian reggae fusion band" is rarely associated with long-term success in music. Indeed, Magic! came and went in a puff of smoke. Also, if we're being honest, we never thought "Rude" was a very good song. It really felt like red-hot reggae that landed with a shrug.

walk on the moon
Barry Crowbar/WireImage
We threw "Rude" in there a little, so let's give some love to another one-hit wonder. That would be “Shut Up and Dance” from Walk the Moon. A band with 80s rock influences, this was an infectious song that proved to be a huge hit, even if Walk the Moon couldn't repeat it.

Distrito de Cali Swag
Tiffany Rose/WireImage
Dance-related songs often become one-hit wonders, and that was true for Cali Swag District as well. The band released "Teach Me How to Dougie" to the world, caught that wave, then quickly disappeared. It didn't help that two of the four band members had passed away.

Psy
ED JONES/AFP putem Getty Imagesa
Psy is the typical one hit wonder. We understand why it had such puzzling viral success. We also knew right away that this was it for the Korean artist. “Gangnam Style” managed to win people over for whatever reason, and its music video became a massive hit on YouTube. Maybe it was the dance associated with it? People like to dance.

baauer
Tim Mosenfelder/Getty Images
This is a one hit wonder that can only happen in modern times. Baauer's hit is "Harlem Shake". It became huge because it was used as the soundtrack to one of those viral online "challenges". Sports teams have done it. Celebrities have done it. We guess "Good Morning America" did it. So it's over. That was it.

trinity james
Prince Williams/Wireimage
In 2012, James released “All Gold Everything” and it was so successful that he signed to Def Jam. So he never managed to make an album for the label, which dropped him. In fact, James never released an official album. He put together many mixtapes, but none of them contained such a popular song as "All Gold Everything".

“I Love It” is an incredibly catchy song. It is practically undeniable. However, it's also easy to see why the Swedish duo never had a hit. This song features Charli XCX, who also wrote the song. Charli XCX has become a successful musician in her own right and probably brings her wit to her songwriting. No one else has given Icona Pop another song that they can lead to success.

Rachel Platten
Tom Cooper/Getty Images za Festival Wellness Your Way
Platten released several albums that came and went. Then she released her third album "Wildfire", which includes the song "Fight Song". That one hit the spot, and then the Hillary Clinton campaign adopted it and took it even further. Her next song was a decent hit, peaking at No. 37 on the Billboard Hot 100, but that was after "Fight Song," which isn't very high on the charts. I mean, can you name the song we're suggesting? If not, is it really a success?

Elle King
Catherine Powell/Getty Images
King's debut single remains her biggest hit, "Ex's and Oh's" got her name and landed her on the "Ghostbusters" soundtrack with the flop song. Since then, however, King hasn't had much chart success. These days, you're more likely to hear King mention, "Did you know she's Rob Schneider's daughter?"

Passenger

Michael Rosenberg was in the band Passenger, and when the band broke up, he kept the name and started releasing solo music. After several years, the British artist succeeded with the song "Let Her Go", which topped the world charts and reached number five in the United States. However, even in his native UK, Passenger never managed to find another big hit.

Os Lumineers
Jamie McCarthy/Getty Images for Bob Woodruff's Institution
If you're a folk band with a hit, you consider that money found, don't you? Perhaps because of its singing (or screaming) nature, "Ho Hey" resonated with The Lumineers. They continued to play folk, and although they made the Billboard rock chart several times, this was a niche success.

Portugal. Man
Miikka Skaffari/Getty Images
Originated from the emo band "Anatomy of a Ghost", Portugal. The Man did this for a few years before "Feel It Still" gave them their only hit. Namely, Motown songwriter Brian Holland is responsible for the song, because it is borrowed from the melody of the song "Please Mr. Postman". Hey, maybe that's why it became such a hit.

monsters and people
Matt Jelonek/Wire Image
The Icelandic indie folk band released their first album, and their first single was a big hit. The music is sometimes strange. "Little Talks" put Of Monsters & Men on the map, but it was a rapid decline in the group's reputation. Although they continued to make music and release albums, "Little Talks" remains the band's only hit more than a decade later.

Designer
Johnny Nunez/WireImage
Desiigner released his debut single “Panda” on SoundCloud in 2015, which quickly became a number one hit. He may be the quintessential SoundCloud rapper. This includes the fact that he has yet to release a full-length album. Desiigner has released many songs and several mixtapes, but "Panda" remains his most important song. At this point, it seems like the album may never happen.

Silence

This is a one-hit wonder that we agree with. Silento was a dance prodigy thanks to “Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae)”. Chances are we won't be hearing from Silent again. As of 2021, he has been held without bail awaiting trial for multiple murders.

Vance Joy
Mariano Regidor/Redferns
Joy was a professional Australian rules football player for several years before leaving to pursue a career in music. Did he make the right choice? Well, his 2013 single “Riptide” was a worldwide hit. He has since had no success in the US, but has had a handful of top 20 hits in his native Australia. Hey, that's better than getting squashed over and over again by Aussie footballers.

American authors
Jason Kempin/Getty Images
"Best Day of My Life" is one of those songs that advertising executives think is perfect and sports media thinks it's the ideal song. So we were flooded with optimistic songs by American authors. "That Song From All Those Commercials" was in demand and became a hit, but they didn't top that song. So much so, their 2023 album is called "The Best Night of My Life."
20 out of 20
Carly Rae Jepsen
Gus Stewart/Redferns
It was a fun Jepsen moment for a second, huh? Look, "Call Me Maybe" was wonderful, and so was the Canadian singer. That song became a number one hit in the United States, and that's great for us. She had a few more songs after "Call Me Maybe" that caught my eye, but only a few. Now you might say, "How about 'Good Time'?" Fair enough, because this song was in the top 10. However, it's not a Jepsen song. It is a collaboration between Owl City and Jepsen. Oddly appeared on Owl City and Jepsen's album, but was written by the Owl City team. Let's call it owl city music.
